Prominent ears could be a distressing factor for young children as well as adults. The procedure known as otoplasty is performed to correct prominent ears by reshaping and repositioning the cartilage of the ears. The goal is to reposition the ear closer to the head and to recreate a natural appearance for patients.
All of the incisions are hidden behind the ear, the ear is reshaped by either removing cartilage or reshaping it. Stitches are placed in precise locations to maintain the new form of the ear and the incision in the back of the ear is closed.
The procedure could be performed as early as 5 years of age. Performing the procedure earlier in life can reduce teasing and the negative self-image that children can develop as a result of prominent ears.
