Dental implants are changing the way people live. They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved.
The high success rate of dental implants is well documented in the world's scientific literature. Over the last 20 years Dr. Emery has played an integral role in surgically placing and tracking a large number of implants. These implants then had crowns and dentures placed on them by a wide variety of excellent restorative dentists in the Washington and national dental community. At the beginning of 2008, more than 10,000 implants with an overall survival rate of 97% had been placed in our patients. These result are reflected in many other publications worldwide and are further evidence of the predictability of dental implants.
The Capital Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the first and only Dental Image Guided Surgical Center in the Washington DC area that offer all types of Image Guided Surgery. What is Image Guided Surgery? Image guided surgery uses virtual x-ray vision, our low radiation dose three dimensional x-ray machine, to implement our virtual surgical plans in real time. This makes surgery less painful and safer because we can make our incisions smaller and more accurately. Accuracy equals safety. Small incisions equals less pain. It is used for image guide implant placement. (IGI™), image guided third molar extractions and image guided removal of cysts and tumors. We also use passive image guided implant surgery including Anatomage™, Navigator™, NobelGuide™ and Simplant™.
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt within the mouth. When they align properly and gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not have to be removed. Unfortunately, this does not generally happen. The extraction of wisdom teeth is necessary when they are prevented from properly erupting within the mouth. They may grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum, and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. Impacted teeth can take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to successfully erupt.
