Inevitably, the abdomen is the first place that extra weight and fat settles in the body. Years of weight fluctuation, pregnancies, and even genetic factors can impact the appearance of your abdomen. A tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin and creates a defined midsection that is smoother and firmer than ever before.
Everyone loves a flat, toned abdomen but often times it is tough to achieve this through diet and exercise. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, can help restore your midsection to its pre-pregnancy appearance or be the “finishing touch” after weight loss. Sometimes it’s an issue with stretched out abs, other times its just extra skin, but often it’s both stretched out abs and loose skin.
Unlike liposuction surgery, which just removes fat, this operation involves removal of skin and fat, with tightening of the abdominal muscles. For this reason, it is more extensive than liposuction surgery. The actual extent of surgery will depend on the amount of excess skin and the laxity of the abdominal muscles.
An ideal candidate is someone in good health and at a healthy and stable weight. A poor candidate is someone who just finished a crash diet and is looking to make further changes. This person is a poor candidate because more likely than not, the individual won’t be able to maintain the weight. If you gain weight after a tummy tuck, the results aren’t so pretty. The person that has slowly lost weight or maintained their weight will do well afterwards because it is more likely the weight will be maintained afterwards. For women, it is good be certain you don’t want to have any more kids. The surgery won’t hurt your pregnancy but you also don’t want to unravel everything you just had surgery to correct.
Liposuction is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure in the world. The goal is to eliminate stubborn fat deposits that tend to settle in areas such as the neck, arms, abdomen, things, and buttocks. Unfortunately, exercise and diet don’t always address these problem areas. Traditional liposuction and high definition liposuction allows the cosmetic surgeon to sculpt your body to get rid of that fat excess and improve your overall tone.
Liposuction’s primary target is the fatty layer between skin and muscle. Its secondary target is the skin. The fat layer is treated by removing fat cells. This is most commonly performed with a suction cannula. The fat that is removed wont “come back” and the sculpted fat that remains helps provide your new shape and contour. While the cannula is busy removing fat, the skin is being stimulated to shrink. This helps the skin adapt to the new smaller body shape and size.
It is very important to have a stable body weight with a realistic diet and exercise program. A person who gains weight after liposuction will typically develop an odd and lumpy appearance where ever liposuction was performed. One who loses weight will typically improve in appearance up to a point. That point is when the skin can no longer contract to keep up with the fat loss. In this case, other surgical interventions may be needed to trim away and tighten the skin.
Abdominal etching is a variation of liposuction used to create the illusion of six-pack abs on males, and athletic definition on females. During the procedure, thin cannulas are inserted into the body, dislodging fat deposits that get suctioned out. Abdominal etching differs from liposuction in that small amounts of fat are left behind in specific areas to imitate muscle fullness and definition.
This technique may also be referred to as liposculpture or high-def liposuction. It is often performed using vaser liposuction, which uses ultrasound energy to melt the fat before it's removed, and to stimulate the skin to shrink.
The ideal candidate for abdominal etching is a patient with an average body type and moderate amounts of fat deposits, who is healthy and committed to a continuous exercise regimen.
A Brazilian Butt Lift is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures right now. This procedure accomplishes two things: it gets rid of unwanted fat deposits and those fat cells are then used to sculpt the buttocks to increase volume and projection.
The procedure is done by liposuctioning areas of the lower back and flanks (love handles) and injecting the fat into the buttocks to provide more fullness and a better shape. The fat grafting technique will not work well if you are too thin and have limited fat deposits. Not all the fat grafted will take and sometimes additional fat grafting sessions may be needed.
The ‘Brazilian Butt Lift’ is performed under general anesthesia or moderate sedation. The surgery takes several hours to perform depending on the extend of liposuction. You will need to wear a compression garment for several weeks after the surgery.
Gynecomastia (oversized male breasts) is a very common condition in men and can result in terrible embarrassment. Many men will try to hide it with thick shirts, avoid bare chest activities, and withdraw from public exposure.
Gynecomastia is a medical term that stems from the Greek words for “women – like breasts”. It is quite common in men and may affect one or both breasts. Both men and women have breast tissue however it usually is not well developed in men. Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast over-development, there is no known cause in the vast majority of cases. The enlargement can be from excess glandular tissue or fat or both.
For men with gynecomastia who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can help. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.
Thousands of men each year spend countless hours at the gym trying to work on the appearance of their chest. Silicone pectoral implants are very common on men these days for that reason. Not everyone is able to get the sculpted chest of a body builder. But don’t get discouraged, body builders commonly seek out this procedure too in order make their body look proportionate.
Unlike breast implants, pectoral implants are made out of harder silicone and do not rupture. The implant is usually placed through a small incision in the armpit and placed below the pectoralis major muscle. The procedure takes 1-2 hours under general anesthesia or moderate sedation.
Body lifting procedures such as an arm lift are common after massive weight loss or after large fluctuations in weight. Some patients may qualify for arm liposuction alone if their skin tone is great. However, if the skin quality is poor due moderate to severe skin laxity and the presence of stretch marks, the patient may be a candidate for an arm lift procedure. The surgery involves cutting out the excess skin and fat with or without liposuction. All stitches are dissolvable and you will have to wear compression garments for a few weeks.
The treatment of spider veins and varicose veins has shown to improve a woman’s self-confidence. In our practice, we use the foam sclerotherapy technique. We first meet you for a consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment. The procedure typically performed in the office and takes 30-45 minutes. The spider veins are injected with a clear solution using a very fine needle. Most patients feel that the procedure is not overly painful. A small number of patients choose do the procedure under oral sedation.
After the procedure, your legs will be wrapped with a flexible dressing. We will advise you to go for a walk for an hour in the mall or outside. Later that evening you can remove the elastic dressings and place on compression stockings. We advise you to purchase the thigh high 30-40 mmHg compression stockings before your procedure. You can find them online or at any local medical supply store.
It is recommended to wear the compression stockings 24 hours a day for 2 weeks to minimize the likelihood of vein recurrence. Most patient do however require a series of 2 to 3 treatment sessions spaced approximately 6 weeks apart.
